0-4-0 side tank A.B.TITTY was the first locomotive delivered to the Swallowdale Railway in 2009. She operated all services in the early days until joined by No.2 BOY ROGER later in the same year.

Originally solid-fuel fired this engine went through two conversions, first to methylated spirit firing and later to butane gas firing. Further improvements in performance were attained in 2013 by fitting new wheel-sets supplied by Dream Steam.

No.1 A.B.TITTY was outshopped from Low End Works as a saddle tank on 2 September 2021 after undergoing a third major rebuild.

The 2021 project entailed:

• New high pressure silver-soldered boiler and high pressure safety valve supplied by RWM Steam
• New chassis (frames, wheels, cylinders, pistons, motion) supplied by RWM Steam
• New inline displacement lubricator and rerouted super-heating steam pipe supplied by RWM Steam
• Side tanks replaced by a saddle tank
• New buffer beams
• New foot-plating
• Raised cab floor
• New cab and roof
• New copper chimney with brass cap
• Replacement and relocation of Bix LPG fuel tank and associated gas pipe

Further mods carried out in August 2023

Firing on this loco was always a problem after rebuilding and spurious readings on the water level gauge glass caused the boiler to run dry; so she went back into works for these further mods:

• A third 8mm vent hole cut into the top of the tank
• Four x 5mm vent holes drilled in the lower sides of the combustion chamber under the tank
• The saddle tank is now bolted to the cab and the smokebox using steel brackets instead of bolting it to the firebox wrapper
• A blowdown valve on the water gauge using a 1/8" pipe-to-pipe 90 deg globe valve which drains down through cab floor
• A regulator handwheel made from a red Wilesco traction engine steering wheel. This makes the loco much easier to drive.

Latest mods carried out in February 2026

• Heatproof ceramic fibre lagging 2mm thickness applied to inside of saddle tank and held in place by heatshield made from tinplate.

Improved performance

[SHIP'S] BOY ROGER was the second steam locomotive delivered to the SdR in 2009 from the Mamod works in the West Midlands.

Alterations included the fitting of dead-leg displacement lubricator and re-routing the exhaust steam pipe to the chimney. Standard SdR centre buffers and draw gear were also fitted.

This locomotive completed a third major rebuilding project in Dec 2020 and was given a full cab and all-round footplating with new full-width buffer beams. A new Bix fuel tank and associated copper fuel pipe was also installed.

The engine returned to works for yet another complete rebuild. This time she  has:

• New full height cab
• New footplating
• Slight increase in length of loco and extended buffer beams
• Saddle tank to replace side tanks
• New chimney
• High-pressure boiler from RWM Steam
• New inline displacement lubricator
• Upgrade wheels by Dream Steam which have been recovered from the No1 rebuild project

Rebuild 2025

• Mamod chassis replaced by RWM Steam Janet chassis
• Water level gauge glass blow-down valve fitted
• Saddle tank fixings redesigned with new brackets

JACKY [Warriner] is a flameproof battery-electric mining locomotive owned by SADMC for use in the Gulch copper mine at High Topps.

Originally supplied as a Danny class "diesel" by KGR Ltd in Orpington, JACKY was re-built as a battery electric locomotive. 

The most recent rebuild in 2021 provided new frames, wheels and electric traction equipment supplied by Essel Engineering Ltd.

The batteries themselves are housed in a battery box above the main frame, and access for battery maintenance and charging is provided by doors on the top of the battery box.

JACKY has also had additional steel sections added along the sides of her main frames to increase weight for improved adhesion on the severe gradients encountered on the climb to the Gulch copper mine at High Topps.

MATE SUSAN is a "Millie" class 0-4-0 side tank built by Roundhouse in Doncaster, and she entered service on the Swallowdale Railway in 2010.

On subsequent visits to the SdR's Low End works the locomotive was fitted with a ne water top-up system and water level sight-glass. Also slide-bars were fitted to the simplified Stephenson slip-eccentric valve gear.

Originally an open-cabbed design, a full cab has been fitted by the SdR in Low End Works with a lamp bracket installed on the cab back-plate.

This locomotive has now been rebuilt with several modifications:

1. Opening smokebox door
2. New full-length running plates supported by angle sections
3. Cab and side tanks modified; rolled edges replaced with squared edges
4. Repaint in Mid Brunswick Green heat resistant paint
