Offering a visitor experience which is quite impossible, the Swallowdale Railway runs through countryside of incredible magnificence.
Our quaint little narrow gauge trains are all steam hauled, with assistance provided by battery-electric mining locomotives when climbing the steep gradients. The line rises from sea level as the engines work hard up over the fells and moors to High Topps in the shadow of Mount Kanchenjunga.
High Topps is also home to the Gulch copper mine operated by the SA&D mining company, sending copper ore in SdR-operated freight trains to the lakeside quay at Horseshoe Cove.
