Progress on the new cab

Progress is being made on the new cab for Roger.

It was found that the doorways would need to be extended right up to roof level in order that a 16mm scale driver would be able to get in and out without bashing his bonce.

Making a new cab

Cardboard patterns for a new cab for Roger have been made and finalised. Then the finished pattern was then flattened out and placed onto a sheet of steel, marked round in ink lining pen, and then the steel was cut to shape.

Sunday test train

The Sunday service train on 22nd November was operated by loco No.2 Boy Roger as an experiment to see whether the little Mamods are capable of hauling the new and heavy Mk2 steel coaches. The service was run as a single coach train using coach 206.

Leaves on the Line!

It's that time of year again when autumn leaves cause a hazard to trains on the Swallowdale Railway. A clean sweep has to be made manually before the services can run, and drivers have to remain vigilant....!

CAPT. JOHN is a "Bertie" class 0-4-0 saddle tank built by Roundhouse in 2012 and first entering service on the Swallowdale Railway in 2012.

On subsequent visits to the SdR's Low End works the locomotive has been fitted with a new water top-up system and water level sight-glass.

The Roundhouse slip-eccentric valve gear has been fitted with slide-bars; and a lamp bracket was installed on the cab back plate.

The locomotive has recently undergone further modifications as follows:

  • new opening smokebox door with working dart and locking bar
  • new full-width running plate
  • steel handrails on saddle tank
  • remounting cab on slightly raised cab floor with new 6BA bolt fixings
  • remounting saddle tank with 6BA stud fixings and new bracket riveted to smokebox
  • riveting of cab backsheet to cab sides
  • repaint in new livery of capri blue
  • now carries her Roundhouse works no. B438
