The Low End Works pattern shop has been making 3-D patterns in cardboard (from Shredded Wheat cartons). This has been used to provide a mock-up of the loco bodywork for the Tram Engine project. This is the procedure:
- Make card pattern
- Attach to existing chassis/frame
- Evaluate the appearance
- Evaluate accessibility to internal loco components:
- Controls
- Water gauge glass
- Pressure gauge glass
- Blow-down valve
- Check accessibility for miniature engine crew
It is clear from the first draft patterns that the roof needs to be lowered and the bodyside cut-outs for access to gauge glasses can be reduced considerably.
